Course Committee

This committee focuses on bridging the relationships between industry and Stanford University affiliates in an academic setting. SSB co-organizes and sponsors two courses, both open to graduate and undergraduate students of all years and all majors: Careers in Biotechnology (MED275) in the winter and Careers in Medical Technologies (MED276) in the spring. This committee provides great opportunities to meet and interact with influential members of the bio/med-tech industries and a chance to design and implement course curriculum that has a significant impact on Stanford students.

Finance and Business Development

This committee is responsible for organizing fundraising projects and maintaining the SSB annual budget. This committee also guides the correspondence between the industry and Stanford University through the co-organization of an annual Life Sciences Career Fair, career services such as resume workshops and aiding Stanford Biodesign in the development of a Resume Book. Furthermore, this committee organized the SSB BioInvestment competition in spring 2008 in which students competed in evaluating and investing in companies in the healthcare sector. The committee will be continuing development of this competition again this year.

Speaker and Events

This committee organizes speaker events, inviting prominent scientists, venture capitalists, and engineers from academia and industry to discuss and present their work. The committee also prepares panels to introduce the diverse opportunities in academia and further involvement in biotechnology in all areas as well as facilitating networking events such as mixers, dinners with Biodesign fellows, and lab tour opportunities.

Communications and Networking (NETCOM)

NETCOM is responsible for facilitating the interaction between industry contacts and SSB student members. This committee will contact industry representatives in order to establish a working relationship and ultimately provide SSB student members with a database of relevant internship opportunities. Additionally, this committee will maintain an alumni network database, manage the SSB mentorship program, and design publications which target the entire Biodesign community.

Venture Team

The team evaluates technologies and adds value to existing inventions as well as creating new inventions to address unmet clinical needs. One of the projects is to evaluate technologies managed by the Stanford University Office of Technology Licensing, to assess the commercialization potential of a technology in the areas of biotechnology, medical technologies, and bioengineering. In turn, members of this team will collaborate with venture capital companies and present these projects for commercialization.
